Waiakea High football tryouts

Waiakea High School football tryouts will run daily through Friday from 3-6 p.m. at Waiakea High School Ken Yamase Memorial Field.

All participants are required to have a current physical and parent-consent form filed with the school’s athletic health care department.

Conditioning started Monday and goes through Saturday, and players must have a minimum of three days conditioning to practice, which starts in pads July 25.

Waiakea’s first preseason game is Aug. 6 against Kamehameha, and must have had minimum 10 days in pads to play.

Soccer camp benefits ex-Vul

Big Island Soccer Academy is hosting a benefit camp Aug. 5-7 at Hilo Bayfront for former University of Hawaii at Hilo soccer player Lindsey Poulsen, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Featuring former UH-Hilo coaches and players, all proceeds from the camp will help cover medical expenses for Poulsen, a standout for the Vulcans who graduated in 2014.

The hours: Aug 5 (ages 6-9, 4-5:30 p.m.; ages 10-14, 5-6:30 p.m.); Aug. 6-7 (ages 6-9, 9-11 a.m.; ages 10-14, 12-2:30 p.m.)

The cost is $55 for the beginners camp and $65 for the advanced camp.

According to a release, the “program is specially designed using the same philosophy and exercises used by the top youth development clubs from around the world.”

Players will train in skill appropriate groups at basic or advanced levels and must bring a ball, shoes, shin guards and water.

Ohana shoreline fishing tourney

The county will hold the 20th annual ‘Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament from Aug. 19-21, with weigh-ins conducted from noon to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21, at Honokaa Gymnasium.

The entry deadline is July 29 for the following divisions: keiki 5 to 12 years old, teens, men, women, kupuna at least 55 years old and ‘ohana or families.

Entry fee is either $25 or $30 per person or family, depending on the division entered. Make checks payable to County Director of Finance.

Completed registration forms must be turned in to the Department’s Recreation Division office at 799 Pi‘ilani St. in Hilo or postmarked by July 29.

Registration forms, along with tournament rules, are available at County Parks and Recreation facilities islandwide, S. Tokunaga Store in Hilo and J. Hara Store in Kurtistown. The forms also can be found online at: http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/pr-recreation/.
