Gary Charles Benson, 72, of Keauhou died July 10 at Life Care Center of Kona. Born in San Francisco, he was a surfboard and canoe builder and vice president and member of Honaunau Head Hunters. Services held. Survived by brother, Jerry (Leinaala) Benson of Honaunau; sister, Kris Rosado of California; hanai daughter, Koko Johnson of California; nieces and nephews. Albert Hajime Kawabata, 74, of Waimea died July 6 at home. Born in Hamakua, he was a retired irrigation district manager for the state Department of Agriculture and entomology technician for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran and member of Kamuela American-Japanese Civic Association, Waimea Lions Club and Kamuela Hongwanji Mission.
