Lachlan Smart, an 18-year-old Australian, exits his plane Friday afternoon in Hilo. Smart landed in Hilo as part of a quest to set a world record as the youngest person in history to fly around the world in a single-engine aircraft. The record currently is held by South Dakota-born Matt Guthmiller. Hilo marks the fourth of 24 stops on Smart’s round-the-world flight. His trip began July 4 in Queensland, Australia. From Hawaii, he will fly across the Pacific Ocean to North America, making his way north and then to Iceland. From there, he will be on the return leg through the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, central Asia and finally back to Australia.
