With the help of Elks National Foundation Promise Grant, Hilo Elks Club members recently delivered 18 upright fans and a water dispenser to Pahoa High and Intermediate School.

During the spring 2016 semester, students conducted an assessment to collect data from peers, teachers, office staff, administrators and parents. They determined that the biggest challenge to learning is to keep students hydrated and focused on hot days, since there is no air conditioning in the classrooms. In addition, working water fountains are few and far between on campus, especially in the weight room where there is no sink and no regular water source.

Once the assessment results were in, Hilo Elks treasurer Lily Chan-Harris, together with Pahoa math teacher Shannon Harbaugh, identified the items that best resolve the issue at hand.

A group of Harbaugh’s students were able to receive the boxes when the delivery arrived. With guidance of Elks members and volunteers, the students learned how to assemble the fans. They were then distributed to different classrooms.

Promise Grant is part of the Elks National Foundation’s Community Investment Program to help meet local needs. The Community Investment Program has allocated more than $9.7 millions in fiscal year 2015-16 for projects throughout the U.S.
