Probably no one in Hawaii knows more about the horse than Parker Ranch’s long-serving veterinarian (and historian and author) Dr. Billy Bergin. Bergin and his son, veterinarian Dr. Brady Bergin, have co-authored “The Hawaiian Horse,” to be published by UH Press in early 2017.

The Bergins will preview the book during a presentation from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the Lyman Museum. The Big Island veterinarians will discuss the introduction of the various equine species to Hawaii in 1803 through their present-day roles in the islands, from draft animal, plantation and ranch stock, to government, sports, cavalry and pleasure uses.
Those who already know a lot or just a little about equines in Hawaii are sure to learn more from these two experts.
Part of the museum’s Monday night Saigo Program lecture series, admission to the presentation is free to Lyman members, $3 for nonmembers. Space is limited; first come, first seated.
