The Hawaii Photography Show 2016 will open July 2 at the East Hawaii Cultural Center.

The Hawaii Photography Show 2016 will open July 2 at the East Hawaii Cultural Center.

“This juried show, with an invitation open to all photographers in the state of Hawaii, is a departure from our procedures in the past,” said Claudia Hagan, coordinator of the event. “To enable EHCC to process a higher volume of entries, we have added a dedicated staff and team to the process, from communication of the event via social media and email, intake, tracking visitor flows and purchases — all the intricate details to make the event a smooth and enjoyable experience for the artist/photographer as well as the gallery visitors.”

The judge for this show is Phil Jung, who divides his time between Boston and Honolulu. Jung teaches undergraduate students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa throughout the school year and at Massachusetts College of Art and Design during the summer.

“Going forward, our plan is to invite photographers from the other islands of Polynesia and Oceania to submit their work as well,” said artistic director Andrzej Kramarz. “We believe that this will benefit local artists by exposing the community to other trends in contemporary photography and opening the prospect of participation with a global context and circulation of photography, creating opportunities for workshops, classes and artist seminars, while further increasing the knowledge of contemporary art as it exists now and in the past.”

The public is welcome to the opening reception and presentation of prizes starting at 5:30 p.m. July 2. The show will run through July 30. The gallery will be open to the public from noon-6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and is free of charge, although a $5 donation is suggested.
