Vulcans garner Diversity Award
The University of Hawaii at Hilo was presented with the Pacific West Conference’s Diversity Award during a dinner last week at the Executive Board Meetings in San Diego last week.
According to a release, the award is given to an institution that, through its community engagement activities, shows a commitment to diversity and inclusivity by creating, sponsoring or participating in programming that embraces and celebrates those within the university’s community who are underrepresented.
The Vulcans were active all over the Big Island, with several projects that benefited schools and youth organizations.
“We are honored to be presented with this award,” UH-Hilo athletic director Patrick Guillen said in the release. “I am proud of our student-athletes, coaches and staff that are so committed and have volunteered hundreds of hours within our community this past academic year.
“We are grateful to be recognized for our efforts and will continue to embrace the opportunity to serve the Big Island, East Hawaii and Hilo communities.”
During the 2015-16 academic year, the Vulcan athletic department had over 30 community engagements.
46 Vuls make the grade
The Vulcans had 46 student-athletes earn Dean’s list recognition for achieving a 3.5 grade point average for the spring 2016 semester.
