Time to disarm

Time to disarm

Even without getting into the hype about the U.S. refusal to apologize for the nuclear bombings in Japan, the fact remains that the American use of atomic weapons caused the greatest single-day mass killing of civilians in the history of the world.

If Mr. Obama — as head of the United States — is serious about getting rid of the scourge of nuclear weapons, he could certainly start by scuttling plans to spend $1 trillion in the coming decade to upgrade Uncle Sam’s nuclear arsenal.

Even as a small gesture of sincerity, the U.S. should definitely commit to a “No first use” of nuclear weapons, and a commitment not to use nuclear weapons on non-nuclear states.

These are simple baby steps, but the entire civilized world will see how sincere is Washington toward concrete actions (as opposed to its constant rhetoric) in actual disarmament.

Hire them!

I, like many Hilo residents, love sports and have totally enjoyed shopping at Sports Authority. They filled a void in our community that was badly needed, and brought in every kind of sports gear to make life a lot more fun for our kids and us older folks, too.

Over the time they have been in Hilo, I have had many encounters with the employees. They are wonderful people! Polite, helpful, professional, hardworking, always with a smile and there to help you find what you are looking for.

I want to encourage our business community to go into the store and meet these wonderful people and consider hiring them for your companies. These aspiring young people would be an asset to any business where customer service is essential.

After speaking with several of them this last week, I know they are worried about their future employment. Let’s step up as a business community and do our best to keep their bright futures growing. Hire them!

I believe that the most important aspect of any business is not the inventory they sell, but the people that faithfully serve to make the customers’ experience the best it can be.

That is exactly what these Sports Authority employees do every day they are at work.
