During the week of May 16-22, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; two were younger than 21.

During the week of May 16-22, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Puna, 10.

• Kona, six.

• South Hilo, three.

• Hamakua and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 446 DUI arrests compared to 385 during the same period last year, an increase of 15.8 percent.

There have been 568 major accidents so far this year compared to 596 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes, one of which had multiple deaths, resulting in 10 official traffic fatalities, compared with six fatal crashes, two of which had multiple deaths, resulting in nine official traffic fatalities, during the same period last year.

Those numbers represent an increase of 50 percent for fatal crashes and 11.1 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
