HONOLULU (AP) — There were two plane crashes in the islands Monday, one of them deadly, officials said.

A fiery crash on Kauai killed five people, according to a statement from the Kauai Fire Department.

The small plane crashed about 9:30 a.m. during a skydiving tour. The pilot, two skydive instructors and two tandem jumpers were thought to be in the plane.

Four of them were pronounced dead at the scene and one man was taken to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane was a single-engine Cessna. FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says the Cessna 182H crashed under unknown circumstances while taking off from Port Allen Airport.

The plane caught fire after crashing.

The National Transportation Safety Board is working with officials to determine the cause of the crash. The NTSB and FAA are investigating.

Another small airplane with two people aboard crashed into the water close to shore off Leeward Oahu.

Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins said county lifeguards brought two people to shore after the single-engine aircraft crashed into the water about 30 yards from Makaha Beach Park.

Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright initially said there didn’t seem to be any injuries, but later said one person was taken to a hospital in an unknown condition. She said the other person wasn’t hurt.
