During the week of May 9-15, Hawaii Island police arrested 36 motorists for driving under the influence. Twelve of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of May 9-15, Hawaii Island police arrested 36 motorists for driving under the influence. Twelve of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, 14.

• Puna, 11.

• South Hilo, nine.

• Hamakua and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 425 DUI arrests compared with 364 during the same period last year, an increase of 16.8 percent.

There have been 538 major accidents so far this year compared to 574 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, one of which had multiple deaths resulting in 10 official fatalities. That compares to six fatal crashes, two of which had multiple deaths resulting in nine official fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 50 percent for fatal crashes and 11.1 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
