For the third consecutive year, the 2016 Hilo Orchid Society’s show display will be designed by artist Shelby Smith.

“This year’s display will feature two large carnival-like elements to go with the theme, ‘Carnival of Orchids,’ Smith said. “It will be a display that you can walk though and get up close and personal with your favorite orchids. The rest is a surprise.”

Smith has degrees in architecture and design ceramics, as well as a master’s in sculpture. He is an avid orchid grower and a member and trustee of the Hilo Orchid Society. His two previous innovative orchid show displays also allowed viewers to walk among the orchids, seeing and photographing their unique details at eye level.

Many other orchid displays, large and small, are being prepared by commercial orchid growers and hobbyists. They can all be seen at the Hilo Orchid Society’s 64th annual Show and Sale, which will take place June 3-5 at Edith Kanaka‘ole Multi-Purpose Stadium.
