During the week of May 2-8, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; one was younger than 21.

During the week of May 2-8, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; one was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Puna, eight.

• South Hilo, seven.

• Kona, six.

• South Kohala, two.

So far this year, there have been 389 DUI arrests compared to 342 during the same period last year, an increase of 13.7 percent.

There have been 505 major accidents so far this year compared to 539 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes, one with multiple deaths, resulting in 10 official fatalities, compared with to five fatal crashes, one with multiple deaths, resulting in seven fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 80 percent for fatal crashes and 42.9 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
