A Hilo man faces a felony charge for a Thursday evening assault that sent another man to the hospital.

Police responding to a 7:30 p.m. report of a fight at Mooheau Park Bandstand in Hilo learned the suspect had allegedly punched a 49-year-old Hilo man several times, causing serious bodily injury.

The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center and then transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he remains in stable condition.

The suspect, 48-year-old William Josh Sutton of Hilo was arrested at the scene and charged Friday morning with first-degree assault. His bail was set a $5,000. He was also charged with contempt of court with additional bail at $450.

First-degree assault is a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment.

Sutton remains at the cellblock with his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday.
