Josephine “Aunty J” Yolanda Hulihee Alapai, 86, of Milolii and Kailua-Kona, died April 25 at home. Born in Hianalole, she was a retired attendant for King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, homemaker and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Visitation and all-night vigil, Thursday, May 5, at her home, 74-5157 Puuolokaa Place, Kailua-Kona. Visitation again 8-10 a.m. Friday, May 6, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kona Stake Center in Kailua-Kona. Funeral service at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Kona Memorial Park in Holualoa. Luncheon and fellowship at the church’s cultural hall. Casual attire; flowers welcome. Survived by sons, Robert (Sharon) Alapai of Hilo, James (Trina) Alapai, Patrick (Lovelyn) Alapai and Hiram (Corina) Alapai, of Kalaoa, Kona, Joseph Alapai and Derrick (Megan) Alapai of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Maile (Bruce) Goold of Las Vegas, Cindy (David) Kaulia and Seraphine Kaulia-Alapai Salazar of Kailua-Kona, Cynthia (Pancho) Johnson of Milolii, Nani (Isaac) Hoohuli of Kealia; brother, Kazuo Fukumitsu of Lanihau; 45 grandchildren and 62 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Anthony Pacheco Benevides, 93, of Hilo died April 13 at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired mechanic for the former Hilo Coast Processing and Mauna Kea Sugar companies, U.S. Army and Hawaii Army National Guard veteran and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation again 8:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, May 6, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Winifred Pele Hanoa, 92, of Waiohinu died April 6 at home. Born in Punaluu, she was a retired practical nurse for the former Hilo Hospital, one of the first kupuna consultants for the Hawaii Burial Council, director emeritus for Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi, co-founder and president of Punaluu Preservation and Ka‘u preservation societies, lifetime member of Hawaiian Civic Club of Ka‘u, member of Hoku Loa Henry Opukahaia Congregational Chapel of Punaluu and served as a kupuna and Hawaiian cultural advisor to numerous public and private educational entities and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Her honors include the Governor’s Kilohana Award, Aha Kupuna Award, Papa Ola Lokahi 14th Annual Health Award and was Hawaii County Outstanding Older American nominee for community work and ecological and environmental preservation. Visitation 9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by sons, Ralph Palikapu (Lori) Dedman of Hilo and Pernell E. Joseph Kaua, 71, of Hilo died March 28 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired heavy equipment operator and pastor for The Pillar of the Church of the Living God.
