Kauhi new Waiakea girls hoops coach

Brandon Kauhi was named the Waiakea girls basketball coach on Wednesday.

Kauhi, a 1998 Hilo graduate, was a basketball standout back in the day. His name is still in the HHSAA state record books with 28 points against Mililani in a consolation final. That was tied for the third-highest total.

He has a long connection to coaching and playing basketball in Hilo. Kauhi has served as a Waiakea assistant coach for the boys and girls basketball teams in the past. He was Waiakea boys assistant for the 2015-16 season.

Kauhi is the president and coach of the B-Elite Basketball club team, which started in January 2014.

He’s waited quite a while to land his first BIIF head coaching job, making several stops along the way.

Kauhi was a Kamehameha girls volunteer coach during the 2014-15 season and a Kamehameha assistant coach from 2009 to 2014.

Before that, he was a Waiakea boys assistant from 2007 to 2009 and a girls assistant from 2004 to 2009.
