Police initiated arson investigations in connection with three of four suspicious brush fires during the weekend in West Hawaii.

All four fires were reported between 9:45 a.m. and 4:36 p.m. Sunday between the areas of the 8-mile marker and the 26-mile marker off Highway 190 between Kailua-Kona and Waimea. Two are classified as third-degree arson, one is as fourth-degree arson and one as only a fire.

They are the latest of a series of suspicious brush fires in the same area since February.

Police ask the public to call 911 if they witness activity that could lead to a brush fire, especially in the West Hawaii area.

The public also is urged to exercise caution and not throw lit cigarettes from vehicles, as drought conditions in West Hawaii have made vegetation highly flammable.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police nonemergency line at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
