During the week of March 21-27 Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.

During the week of March 21-27 Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, 11.

• South Hilo, seven.

• Puna, four.

• South Kohala, two.

So far this year, there have been 275 DUI arrests compared to 225 during the same period last year, an increase of 22.2 percent.

There have been 334 major accidents so far this year compared with 353 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.4 percent.

So far this year, there have been five fatal crashes on Hawaii Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in six fatalities, compared with three fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in five fatalities, during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
