One of the five basic goals of Rotary is literacy, and for the third year, the Rotary Club of Hilo is continuing its Reading to Kindergarten project.

This month, Rotary Literacy Month, 17 Hilo club members fanned out to 10 local schools to read and share stories with some 270 students. A second literacy project with local schools is providing more than 350 student dictionaries to third-graders.

Sometimes reading a story with the book given to the classroom, and sometimes arriving with a copy of the book for each student, the Rotary readers find an enthusiastic welcome in classrooms from September to May.

“What a joy to see these keiki excited about reading,” said Wally Wong, current Hilo club president and dedicated Rotary reader. “And when we can give them all a book for their very own, the smiles just don’t stop.”

Rotary Club of Hilo invites anyone interested in joining to attend any meeting at noon Fridays at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.
