Born in Hilo, he was a bus driver for Jack’s Tours and a bouncer at the former Kona Lagoon Hotel. He also worked at A.C.’s Restaurant. Toshio Shirai, 97, of Captain Cook died Feb. 24 at Life Care Center of Kona. Born in Kapapala, he was a retired commercial fisherman and coffee farmer and member of the Hanei Kumiai, Hawaii Avocado Association, Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, Kona Adult Day Center, Kona Historical Society, Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple and Kona Kumamoto Kenjin Kai. Yoshimi Yamamoto, 93, of Hawi died March 6 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Kohala, he was the retired owner of Veterans’ Service Station, a U.S. Army World War II veteran with the 442nd Unit and member of the Hawi Jodo Mission.
