Join award-winning singer and musician Rebecca Folsom for an intimate acoustic concert from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus.

Folsom’s music has been described as the soulfulness of Etta James, the abandon of Janis Joplin and a touch of folk songstress Joni Mitchell. Tickets are $20 for VAC members and $25 for nonmembers.

As an encore, Folsom is conducting a workshop titled “The Art of Vocal Freedom” from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday at VAC. Learn to sing and express yourself authentically with ease and flow, tapping into your own personal vocal freedom.

Folsom said participants will play with and practice simple exercises to enable their natural voice to shine through. This workshop is experiential and weaves a blend of traditional and nontraditional vocal technique, martial arts, yogic posture, Toltec and Taoist exercises, she said.

Effective for singers and nonsingers alike, students will learn to relax physical strain, learn to flow with the rush of adrenaline, strengthen underdeveloped potential and feel the freedom of liberating release.

“The beauty of these techniques is that they are easy to learn, powerfully affect confidence, ease and personal presence, and greatly impact the ability to connect and engage in dynamic flow with yourself and the world,” Folsom said.

The workshop will be practical, surprisingly transformational and fun, Folsom said. Participants must bring one song to sing and she will accompany them.

The cost for the workshop is $50 plus a $10 supply fee.

Folsom said working with students made touring a much more rich affair.

“The whole experience got deeper, because rather than just showing up in a town, we are immersed in the community,” she said.
