You don’t have to travel to Korea to see traditional royal palaces.

You don’t have to travel to Korea to see traditional royal palaces.

Right under our noses stands the Center for Korean Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The center is a unique building with a design influenced by Kyongbok Palace’s throne hall Kunjongjon, where royal coronations and court rituals were hosted. There is a detached building also designed based on the Hyangwonjong Pavilion located in the middle of a lotus pond at Kyongbok Palace in Seoul.

Ground was broken for the Center for Korean Studies on July 1, 1974, and construction was completed in December 1979. You can visit the campus and visit the CKS to marvel at the Korean carpentry, painting and stonework.

Many materials were brought from Korea to be included in the center’s construction, including the green tiles for the roofing. With all the colorful exterior painting, photos often turn out well, so get those selfie sticks ready.
