Merriman’s offers $1,000 scholarships
Merriman’s restaurants of Hawaii is offering up to three $1,000 scholarships to full-time students graduating from high school or attending Hawaii Community College-Hilo, University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii, Maui Community College or Kauai Community College.
The Merriman’s Culinary Scholarships will be awarded to students in need of financial aid and who enroll in the Food Service Program.

Hilo’s Murayama in honor society
Jenna Murayama of Hilo, a student at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Florham campus in Madison, N.J., was inducted into FDU’s Phi Omega Epsilon honor society for the fall 2015 semester.
Eligibility for membership in the university’s senior honor society is established by completing at least 90 earned credits toward an undergraduate degree with a cumulative grade point ratio of 3.50.
Devoted to the preparation of world citizens through global education, Fairleigh Dickinson University is New Jersey’s largest private university and features more than 100 liberal arts and professional degree programs.
Hawaii students serve in ministry
Several Azusa Pacific University students from the Big Island served in ministry through the Center for Student Action during the fall 2015 semester.
• Tiara Martino, May Chang and Lindsey Yamane of Hilo served in local ministries.
• Caitlyn Kuntemeyer, Richard Kuntemeyer and Thessica Akim Seu Kellu of Hilo served in Mexico Outreach.
Throughout the year, students have numerous opportunities to build relationships in the city of Azusa in the greater Los Angeles area and Mexico. From assisting in food banks to providing after-school tutoring and mentoring, the Center for Student Action at Azusa Pacific mobilizes and educates students toward responsible and transformational service locally and globally.

Grant writing workshop planned
The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s North Hawaii Education and Research Center is offering a basic grant writing workshop from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 19 at Waikoloa Elementary School, 68-1730 Hooko St. in Waikoloa Village.
The cost is $75.
Participants will learn about the grant writing process, how to write a compelling statement of need and learn what donors are looking for in grant proposals. Instructor Jeani Navarro has more than 30 years of grant writing experience and has helped various community organizations secure needed funding.
A certificate will be issued upon completion of the course.
