Police arrest 26 for DUI

During the week of Feb. 22-28, Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.

During the week of Feb. 22-28, Hawaii Island police arrested 26 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• South Hilo, 10.

• Puna, 6.

• Kona, 5,

• South Kohala, 4.

• Ka‘u, 1.

So far this year, there have been 181 DUI arrests compared to 157 during the same period last year, an increase of 15.3 percent.

There have been 207 major accidents so far this year compared to 231 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.4 percent.

So far this year, there have been two fatal crashes, resulting in two official fatalities. Last year at the same time there were also two fatal crashes, one of which resulting in four fatalities.

This represents a decrease of 50 percent in traffic fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
