The 105th year of Scouting in Hawaii was celebrated with the annual recognition dinner Jan. 21 at Auntie Sally’s Luau Hale.

Three prestigious awards were presented to five adults in the Pukahi (Puna-Ka‘u-Hilo) District of Scouting. The district also was honored by Boys Scouts of America for achieving gold status in the “Journey to Excellence” requirements.

Husband and wife Hans and Larae Mortensen of Pack 7 were named “Scout Family of the Year,” an annual award for noteworthy service by a husband and wife registered in Scouting.

The District Award of Merit is an Aloha Council award presented to Scout volunteers who have rendered service to the district of an outstanding nature. The Pukahi District saluted Nathan Tajon, who serves as the district’s training chairman and Cub Scout Day Camp director, and Bruce Meyers, a troop Scoutmaster.

David Kurohara, volunteer district chairman, received the Silver Beaver award, a special recognition of registered adult leaders who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council.

“Scouting would not be possible without the many hours of volunteer service provided by our adult Scouters,” said Leelen Park, executive director of the Pukahi District.

Anyone interested in introducing their boys (and older girls) to Scouting or becoming an adult volunteer can call the Scout office weekdays at 959-0079.
