The Mockingbird Foundation awarded Hilo Intermediate School a $5,000 grant to purchase instruments and support new and existing music education programs with a focus on ukulele, vocal and piano instruction.

“It is our vision that students at Hilo Intermediate School are exposed to and offered opportunities and platforms to discover, develop and deploy their talents and gifts in music,” said music teacher Arnold Peneueta. “Through this grant we will be able to give every student a chance to be exposed to music.”

Hilo Intermediate was selected from among more than 877 initial applicants. The nonprofit Mockingbird Foundation is the leading provider of historical information about the band Phish and its music. Phish is an American rock ’n’ roll band noted for their musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of musical genres and dedicated fan base.

The foundation supports music education for children by fundraising through Phish-related projects. Since 1997, Mockingbird has distributed 274 grants in 46 states, totaling more than $900,000.
