Takahashi excels at The Citadel

Cadet Scott Takahashi of Keaau was honored for outstanding academic achievement and earned a place on the dean’s list for the fall 2015 semester at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C..

To be named to the dean’s list, cadets must be registered for 12 or more semester hours and have a gpa of 3.2 or higher with no grade below a C for the previous semester’s work.

The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a public, coeducational military college that offers a classic military education for men and women seeking a college experience that is meaningful, academically strong and is focused on educating and developing leaders for a strong military and a global workforce.

Mendoza on UNE dean’s list

Pilar Mendoza of Kurtistown was named to the dean’s list for the 2015 fall semester at the University of New England.

Dean’s list students have attained a gpa of 3.3 or better out of a possible 4.0 at the end of the semester.

The University of New England offers dozens of undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs and is home to Maine’s only medical and dental schools.

Mixed media art class starting

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo is offering a class in mixed media that explores composition and texture in the form of collage.

Mixed Media 1 is from 10 a.m.-noon beginning Saturday through March 19 at UH-Hilo’s Manono Campus, Building 393 Room 101. Tuition is $125 and includes some art supplies.

The weekly class is open to ages 13 and older.

Food preserver program offered

The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s College of Continuing Education and Community Service is accepting applications for enrollment in the Master Food Preserver Certificate Program.

Classes will be from 1-7 p.m. Feb. 10-12, 17-19 and 25-26 at The Kitchen, 615 Haihai St. in Hilo. The cost is $200 and includes a text book, cookbooks, kitchen use and all canning jars and food supplies.

People interested in developing their own jams and jellies, canning acid foods, pressure canning low acid foods, pickling and fermenting, drying, freezing and the art of charcuterie are encouraged to become certified Hawaii master food preservers.
