School taking kindness challenge

School taking kindness challenge

Waiakea Intermediate School encourages community members and businesses to participate in the nationwide Great Kindness Challenge from Jan. 25-29 by performing kind deeds.

The Great Kindness Challenge is a positive, proactive bullying prevention initiative. Waiakea Intermediate is challenging students to perform 50 acts of kindness on campus during the week.

To expand the concept of kindness beyond the school environment, the school also will collect toys, stuffed animals, small blankets, pillows and basic hygiene items to benefit the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii.

To make a donation, drop items off at the Waiakea Intermediate counseling office between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Jan. 25-29. For more information, contact Heather Colbert at 981-7231.

Chorus rehearsals begin Monday

The Hilo Community Chorus will begin rehearsing Monday for a spring choral concert.

The choral concert will feature Dan Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living” and Luigi Cherubini’s “Requiem in C minor.”

The nonprofit Hilo Community Chorus is nonauditioned community-based chorus directed by Tom McAlexander and accompanied by Walter Greenwood. Anyone who loves to sing choral music and is willing to devote two hours each week for rehearsals is welcome to join.
