Grant writing class at UH-Hilo

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo brings its popular Basic Grant Writing class back to Hilo in February.

The one-day workshop is offered from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 6 in UCB Room 331. The cost is $75.

Participants will learn the various aspects of the grant writing process, including how to write a compelling statement of need and what funders are looking for in grant proposals. Various samples and handouts will be provided.

NHERC spring sessions set

The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s North Hawaii Education and Research Center announces its community education classes and workshops for the spring 2016 semester.

All sessions will be at the NHERC, 45-539 Plumeria St., in Honokaa with the exception of Basic Grant Writing, which will be at Waikoloa Elementary School.

• Japanese for Everyone teaches participants basic sentence structure, pronunciation and daily conversational expressions along with the history, culture and customs of Japan. This beginner’s course is taught by issei Seiichi Kaida.

When: 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays from Jan. 20-March 23

Tuition: $100

• Author Anthony Roberts shares his creative writing insights in Fundamentals of Writing a Fiction Novel. Participants will learn everything from the basic tools of writing fiction to tips about how to publish their own novel.

When: 9:30 a.m.-noon Saturdays from Jan. 23-March 26

Tuition: $120

• Graphic designer Kellie Miyazu covers everything from the basics to composing dynamic and active compositions and creating a personal portfolio in Exploratory Drawing and Painting for Beginners.

When: 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays from Feb. 6-March 26.

Tuition: $140 (art supplies included)

• Introduction to Permaculture Design with Zach Mermel covers design discipline that mimics nature’s patterns to create healthy, resilient human habitats, culminating in a mini design project.

When: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 20-21

Tuition: $95

• Participants in Basic Grant Writing with Jeani Navarro will learn all about the grant writing process, from how to write a compelling statement of need to what funders are looking for in grant proposals.

When: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 19

Where: Waikoloa Elementary School

Tuition: $75
