During the week of Jan. 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of Jan. 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, seven; Kona, six; South Hilo, four; and South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 29 DUI arrests compared to 27 during the same period last year, an increase of 7.4 percent.

There have been 14 major accidents so far this year compared to 27 during the same period last year, a decrease of 48.1 percent.

So far this year, there have been no fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
