Aloha Performing Arts Company will conduct open auditions for volunteer performers for the enchanting Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “South Pacific” at 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.
A possible invitational call-back audition might be held, if necessary, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday also at the theater. No experience is necessary and newcomers are encouraged to audition.
All roles are available, and include: Ngana, Eurasian girl, about age 11; Jerome, Eurasian boy, about age 8; Ensign Nellie Forbush, young Navy nurse from Arkansas; Emile DeBecque, distinguished Fresh planter, age 40-60; Bloody Mary, wily, funny, tough Tonkinese woman, age 30-60; Luther Billis, 20’s-30’s, comic soldier; Lt. Joe Cable, 20’s-30’s, romantic lead; and Liat, Tonkinese girl, non-singing, Joe’s love interest, about age 17. There is a male chorus of soldiers and sailors, a female chorus of nurses and several nonsinging and nonspeaking roles. Many of the performers will dance, but not all.
Scripts are available for perusal at the APAC office, by arrangement with operations director Melissa Geiger. Each person auditioning for a singing role must prepare 16 bars, or about one minute, of a song.
Rehearsals will begin Dec. 27, and generally will be Sunday afternoons and Monday through Thursday evenings. The show runs for five weekends Feb. 12 through March 15.
“South Pacific” is set on an island paradise during World War II and features two parallel loves stories which are threatened by the dangers and prejudice of war.
APAC’s production casting staff includes: Jerry Tracy, director; Sarah Crawford, assistant director; Bernaldo Evangelista, music director; Marinella Savarese, choral and vocal director; and Juanita Finkenberg, choreographer. Producers are Barry and Gloria Blum.
