15 motorists arrested for DUI

During the week of Nov. 29-Dec. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.

During the week of Nov. 29-Dec. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; South Hilo, three; Puna and South Kohala, two each.

So far this year, there have been 1,007 DUI arrests compared to 1,078 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.6 percent.

There have been 1,425 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,451 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.8 percent.

So far this year, there have been 17 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 11 for all of last year, an increase of 54.5 percent.

To date, 11 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — six to drugs and five to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
