During the week of Nov. 16-22, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Twelve of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were younger than 21.
During the week of Nov. 16-22, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Twelve of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; South Hilo, seven; Puna, five; Hamakua and North Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 964 DUI arrests compared to 1,046 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.8 percent.
There have been 1,354 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,404 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.6 percent.
So far this year, there have been 17 official traffic fatalities compared to 11 for all of 2014, an increase of 54.5 percent.
To date, 11 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — six to drugs and five to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said, including DUI checkpoints Thanksgiving weekend.
