A 21-year-old man arrested after a naked rampage at a Hilo apartment complex — and who allegedly assaulted a police officer, a state sheriff’s deputy and two jail guards — will receive a court-ordered mental examination.
Hilo District Judge Harry Freitas on Friday ordered the exam for Jarrin Tavares Enos, who lives in Hilo but has no permanent address. He set a hearing on the examiners’ reports at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 22.
According to court documents filed by police, at about 5:46 p.m. Tuesday, a 64-year-old Pepeekeo woman spotted a man running, sans clothing, at the corner of Mililani and Hualani streets in Hilo. The man allegedly picked up a large rock and chucked it at the woman’s car, causing a 6- to 7-inch scratch.
The suspect then allegedly ran though Waiakea Villas apartments, still nude and in full view of numerous children, for about 10 minutes, where he was identified as Enos by police Officer Victor McLellan.
Enos eventually was found in Building 5 of the apartment complex, documents state, and subsequently apprehended. While being handcuffed, Enos allegedly punched Officer Erhard Autrata twice between the nose and upper lip, causing a half-inch cut to the inside of the officer’s upper lip.
Police charged Enos with first-degree assault of a police officer, open lewdness and property damage, and took him to the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $2,500 bail. Autrata received first aid for his injury but wasn’t taken to the hospital, a police spokeswoman said.
At Enos’ initial court appearance Wednesday, Freitas maintained Enos’ bail and set a preliminary hearing for Thursday afternoon.
According to court documents, at about 1:20 p.m. Thursday, Enos was causing trouble with other inmates while in the Hilo courthouse cellblock awaiting his hearing. A state sheriff’s deputy, Maui Ramos, told police he was moving Enos to another cell when Enos allegedly swung his belly chain over Ramos’ right shoulder, striking Ramos on the forehead and causing a quarter-sized lump.
Enos was charged with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and $10,000 bail was added. His preliminary hearing was re-scheduled on Friday, as well as an initial appearance on the new charge. After being booked by police, Enos was moved to Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
On Friday, Deputy Public Defender Megan Fellows told the judge Enos wasn’t brought to court for his scheduled appearances.
“I understand something happened at the jail and he had to be sedated,” she said.
In a Friday afternoon email, state Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz said Enos “assaulted two adult corrections officers” that morning.
“One ACO had minor injuries and declined medical treatment or evaluation. The second ACO went to the hospital for evaluation of his injuries. He was treated and released,” Schwartz wrote. She added that Hilo Medical Center determined Enos had also been injured but she was “not at liberty” to disclose the nature or extent of his injury.
The guards weren’t identified and Schwartz said she couldn’t confirm or deny Enos had been sedated. According to a police log, officers were called to HCCC at 5:53 a.m. Friday and the incident is being investigated as a misdemeanor assault.
“HPD or the prosecutors office may determine possible criminal charges,” Schwartz wrote. “An internal investigation is ongoing and could result in internal disciplinary action.”
