Hale building workshop set

The Hawaii Forest Institute invites the public to the ongoing traditional Hawaiian Hale Building Workshop series from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Panaewa Zoo Discovery Forest.

The free workshop, led by traditional Hawaiian hale builder Unko Waltah, helps perpetuate Hawaiian culture and teach the skills of building a structure out of materials from the aina.

The zoo is located at 800 Stainback Highway in Hilo. Wear closed-toe shoes and sunscreen, and bring rain gear.

Free brown bag stress talk today

Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center’s free Brown Bag Lunch Series continues at noon today in the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, 655 Kilauea Ave., in Hilo.

This monthly lunch-and-learn series features speakers discussing topics related to communication, dispute prevention and resolution and transforming conflict. This month’s speaker is Erika Ginnis on the topic “Stress Release Techniques for a Joyous and Peaceful Holiday Season.”

B&G Club raising funds

The Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island is asking for help providing essential, life-changing opportunities for Big Island youth by giving generously to its “It Just Takes One” annual fundraising campaign.

Funds will be used to provide Big Island youth with caring, trained, adult mentors and life-enhancing programs at clubs in Pahoa, Keaau, Hilo, Pahala and Hamakua.

Studies show when children spend more time at the club, they are encouraged to graduate, inspired to lead and motivated to be healthy.

UHH disabilities grant available

The University of Hawaii at Hilo is accepting applications for its Scholars with Disabilities Achievement Grant.

This annual award recognizes and honors a student with a disability for his or her superior scholastic performance and who plans to enroll or is enrolled at UH-Hilo for the spring 2016 semester.

The application deadline is Dec. 18.
