Cal State Monterey Bay cruised and Clayton Yamaguchi coasted, stopping the UH-Hilo men’s golf team’s reign at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate.

The Vulcans finished fifth out of 10 teams at 86-over 890 on Saturday at Waikoloa Kings’ Course, 48 strokes behind the first-place Otters. Sophomore James Coon carded a final-round 1-under 71 to finish tied for eighth at 2-over 218.

For the first time since 2009, the Vulcans failed to sweep the team and individual titles at Rose, their final tournament of the fall season.

UC San Diego’s Yamaguchi was the only golfer to card three rounds under par, closing with a 70 to claim a two-shot victory at 7-under.

Cal Monterey Bay claimed the next three spots and finished a comfortable 27 strokes ahead of runner-up Wilmington (Del.).

The Vulcans enjoyed their best round of the tournament with a 5-over 293 as Jared Kinoshita and David Tottori each shot 73s.

Kyeton Littel (76) tied for 18th among 56 players at 6-over; Kinoshita was 7-over in a tie for 22nd; Ric Yamamoto (78) and Tottori tied for 41st at 17-over. Playing as unattached individuals for the Vulcans were: Anthony Starbuck (80), who tied for 50th at 25-over; Casey Tamura (84) finished another shot back in a tie for 52nd; and Connor Morley (80) was 54th at 31-over.

Azusa Pacific kept UH-Hilo goalkeeper Tiani Teanio busy, peppering her with 14 shots on goal and 30 in all as the Lady Vulcans lost for the seventh time in eight matches, 3-0 in Azusa, Calif.

Haley Fisher scored twice and Katelyn Rogers tacked on a goal for the Pacific West Conference-leading Cougars (13-2, 9-2), who have won eight in row.

UH-Hilo (4-8-3, 3-8) is tied for 12th and finished with only two victories in 10 matches in October. Teanio made 11 saves.

The UH-Hilo men made a brief rally before falling 4-2 to Azusa for their second consecutive loss.

Goals five minutes apart by Cristian Ruelas and Jamie Sporcic helped the Vulcans (4-11-1, 3-7-1) erase a 3-0 deficit, but Keenan Armbrust’s insurance goal in the 87th minute sealed it for Azusa. Carlos Garcia-Partida netted two goals for the Cougars (4-9-2, 4-6-1).

Adam Colton and Alejandro Patino had assists for the Vulcans.

UH-Hilo finishes the season on Oahu with matches Thursday at Chaminade University and next Saturday at Hawaii Pacific.
