The county Department of Public Works Traffic Division will be working on the traffic signals at the Kilauea Avenue and Hualalai Street intersection in Hilo between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 18), weather permitting.

The upgrade involves installing wireless vehicle detection sensors in the roadway on all three approaches and programming the traffic signals to optimize traffic flow. The intersection will remain open and special-duty police officers will direct traffic.

Drivers are advised to expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes.
