A 20-year-old Volcano man thwarted an attempted car jacking Thursday at University of Hawaii at Hilo.

According to police, the man was approaching his sports utility vehicle at 9:35 p.m. when he encountered a male suspect inside the vehicle apparently trying to steal it.

The suspect reportedly exited the vehicle as he approached and entered the passenger side of a truck parked next to it, police said.

The man attempted to restrain the suspect who then assaulted him. The truck left the parking lot and was last seen traveling west on West Kawili Street.

The victim sustained minor injuries but declined medical treatment. The incident is being investigated as an attempted second-degree robbery.

The suspect is described as a white male, about 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-9, at least 200 pounds with a heavy build and fair complexion. He was wearing pants and a T-shirt over a black long-sleeved shirt. His face was partially concealed.

The truck driver is described as a thin white male.

The truck was described as an older model, foreign make two-wheel-drive pickup that was light in color with a darker bed.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or contact Detective Robert Almeida at 961-2386 or robert.almeida@hawaiicounty.gov.
