In a switch from protocol this season, the UH-Hilo men’s soccer team played first Wednesday at Cal State Los Angeles, and the women’s team played second.

It was probably a good thing. It gave soccer director Lance Thompson plenty of time to forget a men’s first half that went awry.

Another tie for the Lady Vulcans was to good news on the day, even if Anahie Duran’s penalty kick in the second half relegated UH-Hilo to 1-1 draw as it went to overtime for the the fifth time this season.

Leighana Weaver netted goal for the Vulcans (3-1-3) early in the second half on a sliding shot off a cross from fellow freshman Danica Steele.

Cal State L.A. (3-5-3) outshot the Vulcans 19-10 and held a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The men’s team took one on the chin.

Troy Dumlao scored in the 11th and 45th minutes, giving him six on the season, and Cal State L.A. scored three times in between in a huge first half en route to a 5-0 victory.

In their fifth consecutive defeat, the Vulcans (1-7) allowed 10 first-half corner kicks.

Subbing for Tyler Hoffman at halftime – one of the goals for Cal State L.A. (7-2-1) came on a penalty kick – Joshua Jasper made three saves in the second half.

UH-Hilo will step back into conference play Thursday at Cal Baptist.
