Four residential and institutional projects on the Big Island were among recipients of Design Awards presented by the American Institute of Architects, Honolulu Chapter, recognizing architectural design excellence for 2015.

Hawaii’s oldest design competition — hosted annually since 1958 — honored the year’s best in architectural projects during a gala event at the Hawaii Prince Hotel and Golf Club on Oahu.

The following Big Island projects and architects were Design Award winners:

• Award of Excellence — Residential: Kahua Kuili (Kailua-Kona). Architect Gregory Warner, Walker Warner Architects.

• Award of Merit — Institutional: Student Services Building, University of Hawaii at Hilo. Architect Lorrin Matsunaga, Urban Works Inc.

• Award of Merit — Residential: Puako Beach Cottage (Puako). Architect Terrance Cisco, Terrance J. Cisco Architect LLC.

• Honorable Mention — Residential: Coral House (North Kona). Architect Shay Zak, Zak Architecture. Honored for great execution of concept.

Design Award entrants were submitted by local AIA Honolulu member-architects.
