Arc receives $10,000 grant
The Arc of Hilo gratefully acknowledges the receipt of a $10,000 grant from Central Pacific Bank Foundation that will be used to purchase janitorial services equipment such as a floor scrubber, buffer and carpet-cleaning supplies.
The Arc of Hilo Commercial Services Department employs people with disabilities in yard maintenance, janitorial services and greenhouse production. The department services state, federal and county contracts in East Hawaii, as well as private businesses.
“This equipment is essential to the success of our business, but more importantly to the success of our program participants, who have been trained for these positions and rely on this income,” said Troy Thompson, the Arc’s commercial services manager.
Puna church hosting picnic
Connection Point has been rooted in the heart of Hawaiian Paradise Park since 1985.
Through the years, the people of Connection Point have become known for their care for others by providing food and clothing to those who need it.
In an effort to provide more family activities in Puna, Connection Point invites everyone to a day of fun at its first free community picnic beginning at noon on Labor Day at the church, 15-1839 32nd Ave., in Keaau.
Activities will include games, pingpong, a giant waterslide, music and barbecue lunch.

Sewage, water focus of UHH talk
The University of Hawaii at Hilo Faculty Congress and the College of Continuing Education and Community Service will host a free public presentation on the impact of sewage pollution on Hawaii Island water quality.
“What’s the scoop on the poop? Sewage pollution in Hawaii Island drinking and coastal waters” will be presented from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 16 in UCB Room 100.
Drs. Tracy Wiegner and Steven Colbert, marine science faculty, will lead the discussion.
