Free camera workshop set

Canon educator Lance Folden is conducting a free workshop, Basic 102: Essential Functions of Your EOS Camera, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. today at the conference room of the Komohana Agriculture Research and Extension Center, 875 Komohana St., Hilo.

During this class, participants will learn about different focusing modes, how exposure can affect the feel of an image, the “rules” of composition and more.

Public libraries closing Sept. 5-7

In observance of the Labor Day holiday, all public libraries will be closed Sept. 5-7.

In addition, Kealakekua Public Library, normally closed Thursdays, will be open Sept. 3.

Hilo chorus rehearsals start

The Hilo Community Chorus will begin rehearsals for the fall season at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo rehearsal room.

The chorus will work on music for its Dec. 5 concert, which will feature Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols” and Joseph M. Martin’s “Ceremony of Candles.”

Rehearsals will continue at 6:30 p.m. every Monday (except Labor Day) until the concert date.

Lions spruce up elderly housing

On consecutive Saturdays amid Tropical Storm Guillermo, Akaka Falls Lions Club volunteers pulled weeds around Kulaimano Elderly Housing residents’ units in Pepeekeo.

Brandi Ah Yo of the Hawaii County Office of Housing and Community Development approached the Lions to request assistance.

The 36 Lions totaled 155 man-hours of service on both Saturdays.

Grant writing class returns

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo brings back its popular Basic Grant Writing class to Hilo from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 12 in UCB Room 331. The cost is $75.

Participants will learn the various aspects of the grant writing process.

Instructor Jeani Navarro has more than 30 years of grant writing experience and has helped various community organizations secure needed funding.
