Hurricane Hilda has been downgraded to a category 1 hurricane and continues to weaken, forecasters said this morning.

At 5 a.m., the storm was about 425 miles southeast of Hilo with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, moving to the northwest at about 9 mph.

Hurricane force winds of 74 mph or higher are extending outward up to 25 miles from Hilda’s center and tropical storm force winds of 39 mph or higher extend outward up to 70 miles from the storm’s center.

The National Weather Service said a turn toward the northwest and a decrease in the storm’s forward speed is expected over the next 48 hours, with Hilda forecast to be moving very slowly on Tuesday.

A tropical storm watch may be posted for the Big Island later today or tonight, forecasters said.
