UHH softball gets top recruit

UHH softball gets top recruit

UH-Hilo softball coach Peejay Brun snagged a golden recruit with loads of speed.

Incoming shortstop Tori Garcia is the California Junior College’s 2015 Golden Shoe Award recipient.

The Golden Shoe Award was started in the 2014 and is given to the top speedsters in the nation by National Fastpitch Coaches Association divisional committees in NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Cal JC, NWAC and High School.

The NFCA all-American from El Camino JC finished the 2015 season with 42 stolen bases and was thrown out only four times. At the plate, she was the 2014 South Coast Conference batting champion.

“I’m excited to have a player like Tori coming to our program,” said Brun. “Our goal is to be more aggressive on the base paths and I’m looking to Tori to help lead us down that road.”

Signing in the Fall 2014 were infielder Sissy Antolin (Mililani, Hawaii/St. Francis) and Billi Derleth (Huntington Beach, Calif./Oceaniew).

UHH volleyball adds McGown

AVCA Hall of Fame Coach Carl McGown will join the University of Hawaii at Hilo volleyball team as an assistant coach for the 2015 season.

Success has been a constant throughout the college and professional career of McGown having left his mark on schools and programs everywhere, from the Church College of Hawaii (aka Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i) to the USA men’s national team. He is now the temporary coach of the Swiss men’s National Volleyball team.

Over the last 47 years McGown has been a part of 11 National Championship teams and has been named an All-American seven times.

McGown coached the BYU men’s volleyball team for 13 years between 1989 and 2002 where he led the team to two national championships (1999 and 2001), twice earned MPSF and AVCA National Coach of the Year honors and compiled a 225-137 record. McGown and BYU began NCAA competition in 1990 after the club team won three national club titles and finishing second in 1986 and 1989.

McGown also served as the head coach of the USA men’s team from 1973 to 1976 and became a technical advisor to the National Team in 1980. From 1982 to 2008 he would be a part of four gold medal teams, three of which were during the Olympics.
