A $17 million renovation of the Hilo Municipal Golf Course will tee off Aug. 14 as Hawaii County officials gather for a groundbreaking ceremony.

When the improvements are completed in November 2016, golfers will be able to enjoy four new greens, a new club house, rain shelters and restrooms.

The project also involves structural repairs, new walkways and bridges, and new perimeter fencing.

The 18-hole facility is the only county-owned golf course on the Big Island and is located at 340 Haihai St.

The course will be reduced to nine holes from February through May 2016. Otherwise, the course will remain “fully open,” said Jason Armstrong, county Parks and Recreation spokesman.

Groundbreaking is scheduled for 4 p.m. Mayor Billy Kenoi and Hilo Councilman Dennis Onishi will be present.
