Police are investigating a robbery late Thursday afternoon in the area of Keawe Street just south of Mamo Street in Hilo.

Police are investigating a robbery late Thursday afternoon in the area of Keawe Street just south of Mamo Street in Hilo.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., a 33-year-old man reported that two males approached him from the back and began to punch him. The suspects reportedly stole the victim’s wallet and cell phone and attempted to take his backpack. The attackers then fled the area.

The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center and then flown to an Oahu hospital for treatment of serious facial injuries.

The attackers are described as two males with dark complexions, one about 5-foot-6 and the other about 6-feet tall. Both were described as having a stocky build.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
