Police are reminding drivers today is the first day of instruction for some public schools and on Thursday, all public schools will be in session.

Drivers should expect an increase in traffic, especially in school zones, during morning and afternoon hours.

Sgt. Robert Pauole of the Traffic Services Section suggests adjusting your daily schedule and starting your day earlier to avoid the temptation to rush while commuting to work. Also, while driving within school zones, use caution and be attentive to children walking to school and crossing in marked crosswalks.

Additionally, police remind motorists that one-way traffic patterns will be in effect in Hilo on Waianuenue Avenue and on Kapiolani Street between Waianuenue Avenue and Haili Street.
