Work is scheduled to begin later this month on a dredging project for the entrance channel of Wailoa Small Boat Harbor.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources awarded the $1 million contract to American Marine Corporation. Work is expected to begin in late July and will include dredging the channel entrance and a portion of the inner basin.

The total quantity of material to be dredged under the contract is 8,900 cubic yards. The material will be stockpiled in a dewatering basin above the beach next to the rock groin.

After being tested and approved by the state Department of Health’s Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch for reuse, DLNR plans to distribute the material to various state agencies.

The contractor will be mobilizing some equipment to the site beginning this week, but will not begin dredging for several more weeks.

The project is scheduled to be complete in late September.

Temporary closures of the harbor entrance channel for brief periods might be required; however, DOBOR does not anticipate the need to close the channel for any extended periods. Boaters should exercise caution when approaching and navigating around the contractor’s dredge barge.

The last time the channel and inner basin were dredged was 2007.
