The first laboratory confirmed case of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) was determined May 20 in South Korea. MERS is a viral respiratory illness that includes symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath.

The damage already has been done in South Korea, with tourism taking the biggest loss; restaurants, department stores, theaters and basically anywhere people normally would gather were near empty like a ghost town as people feared the spread of MERS. As of July 5, 33 have died from MERS in South Korea while 2,467 have been placed in isolation.

The first case started in Seoul and the illness has reached surrounding provinces. While it seems the government has MERS under control now, on July 2 there were two new cases of MERS identified after four days of no new cases.
