In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, all public libraries will be closed Saturday through Monday.

Kealakekua Public Library will be open Thursday with revised hours. Call 323-7585 for information.

Hawaii cancer position filled

Holly Ho-Chee-DuPont, of Hilo, was named the state lead ambassador for Hawaii by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society.

In her new role, Ho-Chee-DuPont will be the volunteer for ACS CAN in Hawaii. ACS CAN is the nation’s largest cancer advocacy organization and supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.

As the state lead ambassador, Ho-Chee-DuPont is the key volunteer contact for Sens. Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz, and works with staff members and other volunteers to set recruiting, fundraising, training and legislative campaign goals for the state.

Horse wellness symposium set

Hawaii Horse Expo will present its first Equine Wellness Symposium from Sept. 11-13 at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel &Bungalows on the Kohala Coast.

Informative topics will focus on studying the prevention, identification and treatment of diseases, infections and wounds encountered by horse owners and veterinarians.

Proceeds benefit the Humane Society’s Horse Rescue Fund, which helps abused and abandoned horses on Hawaii Island.

Child behavior classes at UHH

The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s College of Continuing Education and Community Service is accepting registration for two child behavior classes for parents, caregivers, and early childhood professionals.

Child Social-Emotional Development classes are 10 a.m.-noon Saturdays, May 30-June 27, in UCB Room 113. The cost is $60.

Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder sessions are 5-7 p.m. Wednesdays, June 3-July 1, in UCB Room 113. The cost is $80.

Both courses will be taught by Johanna Taylor, Ph.D., program manager at Easter Seals Hawaii Early Intervention Program in Hilo.
